Summer School
£500
Monday 7th July – Friday 11th July
10am – 4pm daily
Our five-day summer school offers the chance to delve deeper into the intricate world of wood engraving. It will cover everything on offer in our four-day course with the additional time to reflect and develop a second engraving under the guidance of David Robertson and Leonie Bradley. Our courses are unique as teaching is delivered by two experienced engravers with different approaches and styles.
This course covers all the basics to get you started as a wood engraver and is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience.
The course covers:
· Choosing a suitable image – what makes a good engraving?
· Transferring image to block
· Engraving: different substrates and mark-making
· Tools and sharpening
· Inks
· Paper
· Printing: burnishing, Albion platen press and FAG proofing press
You’ll begin with a practice block, building up your confidence with a tool and creating a range of textures. You’ll have a one-on-one to talk about your ideas for a larger image before transferring your design to a block. After completing your first edition, you’ll have another one-on-one before embarking on a second block. By the end of the course, you will leave with two small editions and a wealth of knowledge. We hope to inspire you to continue in the wonderful world of engraving.
All materials are included with the option to purchase further blocks and tools if you wish to continue. You don’t need to bring anything with you, but it’s helpful if you have some sketches, photos of ideas or other references. Once you book, we’ll send you an info pack with all the necessary details.
During the course, there will be an optional group meal and pub visit. We can recommend accommodation locally and help arrange lifts to/from Bath.
